Ivory Coast started their preparation for the Africa Cup of Nations with a 1-0 win over reigning African champions Nigeria in Abu Dhabi on Sunday.

Forward Salomon Kalu scored the winner four minutes from time after latching onto a pinpoint cross from Newcastle midfielder Cheick Tiote.

The Elephants will meet Sweden on Thursday in Abu Dhabi before flying to Equatorial Guinea for the Jan 17-Feb 8 tournament.

Ivory Coast, who are looking for their first African title since 1992, were drawn in Group D alongside four-time African champions Cameroon, Mali and Guinea. Nigeria failed to qualify for the tournament.
