Cairo 48 Hour Project, Special Short Film Screenings, 6:30pm

Cinema art house Zawya will screen the world's best 48HFP films this Sunday. All the featured films were made in only 48 hours as part of the global phenomenon that is the world's largest filmmaking competition. The competition will take place in Cairo again this year for the 3rd year in a row on Thursday 11 September. For more info and how you can register click here.

Endless Laughter theatre play at Miami Theatre, 8pm

Following the performance's success during the last National Theatre Festival, when it was staged at Hanager Theatre, the play will be re-performed at Miami theatre daily until 15 September. According to the play's promotional material, the show revolves around the idea of suicide discussed through different stories extracted by the director, Shady El-Dali, from the team's improvisations.

Rock the Casbah screening at Zawya Cinema, 3.30pm and 6.30pm

The French-Moroccan drama, the filmmaker’s first score since 2005, premiered at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival to glowing reviews. Set in Tangiers, the film follows three women as they gather at home following the father’s death for three consecutive days. The result is a jumble of heartaches and joyous memories that push the sisters into long overdue confrontations. The film stars veteran actor Omar El-Sherif and Lebanese actress/director Nadine Labaki and it is directed by Moroccan Laila Marackchi.

Coming Forth By Day screening at Wekalet Behna, 6pm and 8pm

Hala Lotfy’s award winning Al-Khoroug Lel-Nahar (Coming Forth By Day) captures the pain of a mother and daughter as they take care of their sick man. “Those who have fully enjoyed their bodies cannot be submissive. And those who never have? Can they survive the slavery of solitude and impotent acceptance of what they can’t change or embrace?” reads the film’s synopsis.

Omar Khairat at Cairo Opera House, 8pm

Omar Khairat is a renowned Egyptian composer, pianist, whose original compositions -- which bridge contemporary Arab music and western music -- have earned him a large following in Egypt and the region. Khairat performs his music around the region with his Omar Khairat's Group. He has composed music for several movies, recorded a number of CDs and won several local and international prizes.

About Lovers play at Amir Taz Palace, 8pm

About Lovers, a musical by independent theatre director Hany Afifi -- who recently presented I am Now Dead at the Falaki Theatre -- will be performed between Monday 8 September till Thursday 11 September. The performance, previously shown in November 2013 and Ramadan 2014, is based on The Ring of the Dove, the renowned treatise on love by Andalusian writer Ibn Hazm. The House of Arab Oud will perform the selections of Umm Kulthoum music featuring in About Lovers.

Wednesday 10 September  

Cairo Station kicks off Youssef Chahine retrospective week at Zawya Cinema, 6.30pm

Late iconic director Youssef Chahine’s Bab Al-Hadid (Cairo Station, 1958) was one of the artist’s most important films which is set to inaugurate a week-long retrospective in his honour. Cairo Station also stars Chahine as a disabled homeless man selling newspapers in the train station who is trapped in a love triangle with Hanouma (Hind Rustom) who sells sodas in the station and Abu Sri’ (Farid Shawky) who is trying to start a movement with the stations workers against their tyrant boss. The retrospective week will continue everyday until Tuesday 16 September and will also host talks and other events.

Play Solitaire at Al Kotobgeya Bookstore, 7:30pm

Written and directed by Dalia Bassiouny, Solitaire positions the events and aftermath of January 2011 in Egypt and the twin-bombings of September 11, 2001 in the United States as the most pivotal historical junctures of the 21st century. Toying with the notion of identity, Bassiouny weaves her own experience as an Egyptian woman in Tahrir Square and the strife endured by Arabs worldwide, and particularly in America, post 9/11. In doing so, she guides the audience into a personal journey in search of inner peace and coexistence. Solitaire has previously been shown in El-Hanager Theatre. It has also been performed internationally in Germany, Zimbabwe, the US, Morocco and Iraq. Bassiouny is one of Egypt’s renowned theatre directors. In Cairo, she is a university professor, theatre critic and translator. Among her translated work is Nine Parts of Desire, a one-woman play by Iraqi-American playwright Heather Raffo. Bassiouny holds a PhD from New York University, where she completed her masters studies also in Theatre. She holds a second masters degree in Drama from Bristol University.

Fair Trade Movie night at The District, 7pm

Entrepreneurial co-working space The District, in collaboration with non-governmental organisation Fair Trade Egypt, invite people for a film night at the space. The night will include a film screening on the concept of fair trade - where consumers often have to pay more money for products with the label but knowing that the workers and artisans are paid fairly and not exploited. The night will also feature Egyptian artisans that are part of the fair trade movement as well as selling products and food.

BA Chamber Orchestra at the Russian Cultral Centre in Alexandria, 7pm

Conducted by Nayer Nagui, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina Chamber Orchestra will perform Dvorak's two walses Op. 54, followed by Rageh Daoud's Passacaglia for oud, organ and strings. The evening will also include Grieg's Holbert Suite Op. 40 and Tchaikovsly's Serenade for String Orchestra in C major Op 38.

Eskenderella at El-Genaina Theatre, 8.30pm

Eskenderella, one of the most popular revolutionary folk cover bands who sing for Sheikh Imam, Sayyed Darwish and Ziad Rahbany, also have their own repertoire of songs composted by their founder Hazem Shahin to lyrics by poets such as Fouad Haddad, Salah Jaheen, Amin Haddad, Naguin Shehab and others. The band consists of oud players: Hazem Shahin, Ashraf Nagaty, Hassan Al-Manialawy, Islam Abdel-Aziz; keyboard players Youssef Al-Sherei pianist Ahmed El-Mogy; percussionists Farid Gad and Amir Ezzat; Bassist Seka and singers: Hazem Shahin, Ashraf Nagaty, Hassan Al-Manialawy, Islam Abdel-Aziz, May Haddad, Salma Haddad, Alia Shaheen and Youssef Al-Sherai. This year the band released their album Safha Gedida.

Cairo Symphony Orchestra performs Beethoven's Symphonies at the Cairo Opera House, 8pm

The orchesra conducted by Ahmed El-Saedi will perform Beethoven's Symphonies no. 2 and 6. The concert is part of Beethoven Symphonies Series which started with with Symphonies no 1 and 5 on Saturday 6 September .

Darwasha represent a hybrid of progressive rock and oriental sounds along with a mix of electronic music. Baraka Band was established in 2008 by Maryam Saleh and Wessam Sultan to fuse rock music with Sheikh Imam covers as well as their own writing. The band is now back with a new line-up,

Screening of Domestic Life at French Institute, 7pm

La Vie Domestique (Domestic Life) is a 2013 with the screenplay and directed by Isabelle Czajka. According to IMDb, the movie talks about Juliette trying to find herself in the residential suburb of the greater Paris metropolitan area. "All the women here are in their forties, have children to raise, houses to keep and husbands who return home late at night. Today she has an appointment in Paris that is important for her career, but she also has to run errands and pick up the kids from school."
