Fifty protesters arrested for demonstrating in front of the Israeli embassy, Cairo, on Nakba have their 1-yr sentences suspended and are released after signing guarantees

Egypt’s Supreme Military Court ordered on Saturday the release of 50 of the protestors arrested in front of the Israeli embassy after they signed a guarantee that they will never again damage public property. Others are still detained.

The 50 protestors were sentenced to one year in prison, but the sentence was suspended.

The family of the detainees and solidarity activists staged a demonstration the same day to demand their release.

Over 150 protestors were arrested on 15 May at a demonstration in front of the Israeli embassy in Cairo. The protest was dispersed by the military and state security forces using live ammunition, tear gas and rubber bullets, ending a day-long commemoration in front of the Israeli embassy of Nakba (or the “catastrophe” the day the new state of Israel was created and forcibly removed Palestinians).
