Pro-Morsi Wasat Party head Abul-Ela Madi was released Wednesday after spending two years in jail pending investigations into violence-related charges.

He was arrested in July 2013 shortly after Islamist president Mohamed Morsi’s ouster. He is accused of inciting violence ahead of deadly clashes in the Bein El-Sarayat neighbourhood of Giza that resulted in 23 fatalities.

The clashes were between opponents and supporters of Morsi following his toppling.

A Giza criminal court ordered Madi’s release on Monday after accepting an appeal, which overturned a previous decision to extend his detention pending investigation.

Madi was not standing trial and therefore reportedly released, as he had already served the maximum time for provisional detention.

A photo of him and his son together in a car after his release was soon circulating on social media platforms in Egypt.

Madi is one of many Islamist figures arrested and prosecuted for terror-related charges in the wake of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi's ouster.

Madi is considered to be a staunch supporter of Egypt's ousted Islamist president Morsi.

The Wasat Party leader was a prominent member of the now-banned Muslim Brotherhood before parting company with the Islamist group in the 1990s.

He sought to establish the Islamist Wasat Party, which was only officially recognised after the January 2011 uprising.

The Wasat Party was a once-prominent member of the National Alliance to Support Legitimacy, a coalition that was formed by various Islamist parties and groups and called for the reinstatement of the imprisoned Morsi as president, among other demands.
