Egypt’s Socialist Popular Alliance Party (SPAP) announced Tuesday that none of its candidates won or made it to the run-offs in the first stage of Egypt’s parliamentary elections.

Medhat El-Zahed, acting chair of the SPAP, said that the party’s candidates fought a “fierce and honest battle” in an unfair atmosphere where “electoral violations and vote-buying from other candidates prevailed.”

El-Zahed added that although the party members lost, they managed to present their visions to voters and supporters of the 25 January 2011 revolution as well as expand their audience.

He also said that the party will benefit from its experience in the 2015 parliamentary elections in terms of future development.

Six candidates were representing the SPAP on individual seats.

Ahead of the elections, the SPAP had launched a campaign called “If You Elect Them” aiming to raise awareness among voters about the dangers of electing members of the previous regimes from the banned Muslim Brotherhood and the now-dissolved National Democratic Party from the Mubarak-era.
