France has advised against all but essential travel to or from Sharm El-Sheikh, but French nationals can still travel there as no official ban is in place, an Egyptian diplomat has said.

Several countries, including Russia and the UK, grounded flights to the Red Sea resort after a Russian passenger jet crashed last month over Egypt's Sinai region almost half an hour after take-off from Sharm, in what Russia says was a bombing by militants.

Egyptian Ambassador to France Ihab Badawy said Sunday the travel advice in the wake of the crash does not constitute a ban on all travel but rather marked the area on the map in orange, advising against all but essential travel. Red-coloured regions are subject to a recommendation against all travel.

Badawy told Egyptian reporters in the French capital covering a UN climate summit that French nationals can still head to the coastal city if they wish.

Egypt has to date stopped short of acknowledging the Airbus A321 crash — which killed all 224 people aboard — was caused by a bomb, saying investigations must run their course before any conclusion is reached.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, who heads a UN climate change committee of African leaders, is currently in Paris for the global climate gathering that will start Monday.
