Trip Along Exodus explores Palestinian politics over the last 70 years through the perspective of Dr Elias Shoufani, the filmmaker’s father and leader of the Palestine Liberation Organisation, an academic writer and leftist intellectual and the author of 25 books.
Starting in Palestine in 1948, the film follows Dr Shoufani through Washington DC, New York, the Galilee, Jordan, Lebanon and ending in current day war-torn Syria.
According to the event programme, Hind Shoufani says her father led a mysterious life.
“When I was growing up, I knew that we had bodyguards and I would hear hushed whispers of political manoeuverings. In my late twenties, I discovered that my father had abandoned a life in US academia to join the Palestinian revolution of the 1970s. He wanted to create an opposition to Arafat’s mainstream policies of settlement. I began to try and understand his choice, for which I tried to recreate Palestine’s 20th century history.”
The artistically executed documentary recreates a personal history from family archives of photos and 8mm films, and merges those with interviews, cartoons and animation.
