Egyptian mobile phone numbers will all change on Thursday 6 October as part of a state drive to meet increased user demand, the National Telecom Regulatory Authority has announced.

The changes will mean every Egyptian mobile phone number will now be 11 digits in length.

Amendments will be different for each of Egypt's three mobile operators:

Etisalat
Current 10 digit numbers, which all start 01, will take an extra 1. They will now begin 011

Current 11 digit numbers, which all start 0152, will change the 5 to a 1. They will now begin 0112

Mobinil
Current 10 digit numbers, which start 01, will add a 2. They will now begin 012

Current 11 digit numbers, which start 0150, will replace the 5 with a 2. They will begin 0120

Vodafone
Current 10 digit numbers, which start 01, will add a 0. They will now start 010

Current 11 digit numbers, which start 0151, will replace 5 with 0. They will start 0101

Mobile operators will have four months to fully comply with the decision, during which time users will be able to call using either the old number or the amended one.

Egypt had 76.43 million mobile users as of June, up 30 per cent on the year before, government figures showed on Monday.

(015) problem
@Sara and Ali. You won't have to ask the people starting with 015 to know their operator. The number following the (015) determines the operator. 0150 = Mobinil (change to 0120) 0151 = Vodafone (change to 0101) 0152 = Etisalat (change to 0112)

phone numbers change
so, you would have to know all your contacts providers to know how to change the phone numbers? This not correct. For Mobinil, that means a number that begins with 012 will be 0122, 017 will be 0127, 018 will be 0128, 015 will turn into 0125. As for Vodafone, the numbers starting with 010 will turn into 0100, 016 will be 0106, 019 will 0109, while Etisalat’s 011 will be 0111 and 014 to 0114.

Could you please give an example!? I don't get it where to add the additional figure. Like i.e. Vodafone: now: 010- 123 45 67, clearly a 10-digt number. Will that change to 0100- 123 45 67??? Hoping to read your reply..

BRAVO for giving us a 36 hours notice. It is a shame, in a country of illiterates a one month notice would have been a must, will you monitor better the calls ? do you realize the damage you do to businesses and proffessionnals ' Again shame on you

First off I want to say fantastic blog! I had a quick question in which I'd like to ask if you do not mind. I was curious to know how you center yourself and clear your mind prior to writing. I have had trouble clearing my thoughts in getting my thoughts out there. I truly do take pleasure in writing but it just seems like the first 10 to 15 minutes tend to be wasted just trying to figure out how to begin. Any recommendations or hints? Thanks!
