Five police conscripts were killed on Monday when an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated in North Sinai, a security source told state news agency MENA.

An unspecified number of conscripts were also injured in the explosion.

Security forces have been battling an Islamist insurgency for several years in North Sinai, with hundreds killed on both sides.
