Egypt expressed on Tuesday its concern over Turkey's reported plans to explore for oil near Cyprus, the Egyptian foreign ministry said in a statement.

The ministry said that the Turkish stance represents Ankara's determination to continue its unilateral measures that would escalate the situation in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Egypt underlines the necessity of not escalating the situation and respecting the rules of international law, the statement said.

A Turkish ship planning to drill for oil and gas close to Cyprus dropped anchor off the island on Monday. It is the second Turkish ship to explore for oil near Cyprus this year.

The move drew criticism from the Nicosia and the EU.
