Egypt’s prosecutor-general has dismissed murder charges against a 15-year-old girl who killed a man who raped her.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the prosecution said that Amira Ahmed had a "legitimate situation of self-defence" when she stabbed a microbus driver to death with the knife he originally used to assault her.

He had kidnapped her and taken to her a deserted area in Giza, the prosecution said.

Ahmed was arrested and detained on murder charges after the incident in July, causing a public outcry.

She was also subjected to a virginity test.

A social media campaign was launched demanding her immediate release, and the National Council for Childhood and Motherhood (NCCM) issued a press release supporting her.

The decision by prosecutor-general Hamada El-Sawy comes nearly a week after a court ordered the release of Ahmed.

The case has been reported in the Egyptian media under the label of "the Al-Ayyat girl," after the town in Giza governorate where the incident took place.
