A Cairo criminal court sentenced on Monday seven defendants to death for their involvement in the killing of eight policemen in an attack on their microbus in 2016 in Helwan in southern Cairo.

Out of 32 defendants in the case, the court sentenced three to 20 years in prison, 15 to 10 years in prison, and acquitted seven.

Those convicted were charged with joining a terrorist organisation, the possession of explosives and firearms, murder, and carrying out terrorist attacks.

The verdicts can be appealed.

The court had previously referred the death sentences to the country's grand mufti for his non-binding opinion, which is legally required in death penalty cases.
