Egypt's Supreme Council for Media Regulation (SCMR) decided Sunday to block two news websites for six months over publishing fake news on the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.

According to the statement issued on Sunday by the SCMR ,six Facebook pages and Twitter accounts were warned over spreading fake news on the virus.

The SCMR also referred several other rumor-spreading pages to the public prosecution for necessary legal action.

The council also stated that it was receiving citizens' complaints about any news websites or social media accounts spreading fake news at a WhatsApp number it launched earlier.
