Egypt’s Local Development Minister Mahmoud Shaarawi instructed governors nationwide on Monday to halt the issuance of building permits.
The ministerial order, effective as of Sunday 24 May 2020, covers the governorates of Greater Cairo and Alexandria as well as the capitals of governorates and major cities across the country.
The decision, which came upon the directions of the Cabinet, will last for six months.
In a statement on Monday, Shaarawi stressed that all local officials should abide by the Cabinet's decision, urging them to tour cities and municipalities during the Eid holiday to detect any violation, warning that offenders will be tried before a military court.
Industrial, tourist, and government facilities as well as national projects are exempted from the ministerial decision.
