That is up from the 89 cases reported the day before.

The death toll has reached 5,262 with 19 new fatalities recorded on Sunday, the health ministry said.

The ministry added that 809 patients had been discharged from hospitals, bringing the total number of recoveries to 65,927.

Egypt has been recording daily infections tallies of less than a thousand new cases consistently since 9 July.

The daily toll dropped below the 200-case threshold from 2 to 21 August.

The lowest daily tally of infections in four months was recorded on Saturday, with only 89 new cases.

"The cases will not rise, and if they do, they will be minor increases," said the head of the health ministry's scientific committee to combat the coronavirus, Hossam Hosny, speaking to talk show Ala Masaolity (“It’s My Responsibility”) on Sada El-Balad channel on Sunday evening.

"If the virus appears, it remains, but we will reach zero new severe coronavirus cases … Our great hope and the goal that we all are working on is [reaching] zero new fatalities," Hosny added.
