Rene Weiler could lead champions Ahly for the last time in the Egyptian Premier League when they meet bottom side Tanta on Saturday, with reports suggesting that he would leave the club five days later.

Ahly said they will make their position clear on Weiler's future on Thursday but the Swiss looks to have already made up his mind that it's time to bid farewell, even though an African Champions League semi-final is looming.

The 47-year-old reportedly plans to take advantage of a clause in his contract that allows him to leave without paying any penalties in the first 10 days of October. Weiler's new deal, which he signed in June, runs until the summer of 2021.

The former Anderlecht and Luzern boss led Ahly to their fifth straight league title following an impressive campaign but he then took club officials by surprise after telling them he needed some time off with his family to discuss his future.

Reports said Weiler had his request to take five days off in October rejected by Ahly, who fear he would fly to Switzerland and not come back while the Red Devils gear up for a vital clash against Morocco's Wydad in the Champions League semis next month.

"The club's board has set the coming Thursday as a final date to announce its position on Rene Weiler, the coach of the first team," Ahly said in a brief statement on their official website.

"This would come after the clarification of all matters, and in light of the terms of the contract made with the coach."

Ahly, who wrapped up the title with six rounds to spare earlier this month, crushed lowly FC Masr 3-0 on Wednesday to make up for two consecutive draws and are expected to ease past another relegation-threatened club in Tanta.

They have started to give some rest to their regulars to have them fresh for the Champions League, Ahly's primary target this season.

Weiler is expected to still lead Ahly for one more game when they face Tersana in the Egypt Cup on Wednesday.
