At least 44 people were killed in an air strike on Thursday in the rebel-held town of Maaret al-Numan, rescue workers told an AFP journalist at the scene.

"We have recovered 44 corpses from under the rubble," one rescue worker said.

A medic had earlier told AFP that at least 20 people were killed and 30 were missing.
