More than 50 Egyptian intellectuals and employees of the National Library and Archives of Egypt gathered Tuesday in front of the Ministry of Culture demanding the resignation of the chairman of the Library, according to Shorouk newspaper. The new culture minister, Mohamed El-Sawy, met with a delegation of the protestors to discuss their demands.
Shorouk said the delegation requested an inventory review of the contents of the National Library and Archives of Egypt, and the resignation of Mohamed Saber El-Arab, accusing him of wasting public money. Employees also demanded that the corruption in the administration of cultural palaces be investigated.
According to the same source, El-Sawy confirmed that he will consider the demands of the protesters seriously, especially that El-Arab had exceeded the legal age of retirement, promising to meet them again on Saturday.
Hassan Surour, deputy editor-in-chief of Folklore magazine confirmed to Ahram Online that there are no strikes at the General Egyptian Book Organisation itself, the organisation headed by El-Arab.
