Egypt’s security forces detained Ahmed Maher, the founder of April 6 youth movement, on Friday as he arrived to Cairo Airport from Vienna following a political trip in the United States.

Maher had participated in several conferences on Human rights and a panel organised by the New America Research Institute, according to the 6 April official Facebook page.

The 6 April official Twitter account called on supporters to head to the Airport, accusing “thugs” of the National Security Apparatus - the successor of the notorious, now-dismantled State Security Apparatus, of targetting Maher.

Few minutes before Maher’s arrest, Mohamed Ibrahim, a member of the group's political bureau, stated via Facebook that Maher has been “detained inside the airport with no legal justification."

An interior ministry official said that Maher was detained in accordance with an arrest warrant issued by the general prosecution, according to state-run news agency MENA.

"Maher is accused of inciting protests in front of the residence of Interior Minister Mohamed Ibrahim," the official added.

On 29 March, four members of the movement were arrested and charged with rioting and resisting authorities after security forces dispersed a protest held by the youth movement at the residence of Minister Mohamed Ibrahim in New Cairo.

The protseters held women's underwear and banners accusing the ministry of "prostituting" itself to the regime.

One month later, a New Cairo court ordered the release of the four members. However, it was unclear whether or not the charges against them have been dropped.

The 6 April movement had critically supported President Morsi in the June 2012 presidential elections against Mubarak era candidate Ahmed Shafq.

However, the movement has been steadily condemning Morsi's policies accusing the Brotherhood leader of betraying his pro-revolution campaign promises.
