After being arrested for saying actress Elham Shahin will never enter heaven, Sheikh Badr appeals his year jail sentence on a technicality

Sheikh Abdullah Badr appeals his one-year prison sentence given to him for insulting Egyptian actress Elham Shahin.

Egyptian security forces arrested Abdullah Badr on 1 May, upholding a December 2012 court verdict with bail set at LE20,000 ($2,870).

In the filing, attorney Mamdouh Ismail claims that the court verdict was issued without considering whether his client's statements against Shahin legally classify as an "insult."

"Elham Shahin is cursed and she will never enter heaven," was Sheikh Badr's statement on his programme on the conservative channel, Al-Hafez.

The popular actress claimed last September that Badr attacked her publicly for expressing her fear of the Islamic political current and for stating that she would not vote for Islamist political parties in the elections.

In January, Egypt's Administrative Court ordered that Badr's television show Fi Al-Mizan be taken off air for 30 days, partly conceeding the plaintiff's request.
