Police fired tear gas at protesters who gathered at Istanbul's iconic Taksim Square on Saturday, a day after violent clashes against the Islamist-rooted government left dozens of people injured, according to an AFP reporter on the scene.

The demonstrations, which flared after police moved in to break up an environmental protest, are among the largest against Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's government since it assumed power more than a decade ago.
