Five Syrians onboard the diverted EgyptAir flight bound for New York are seeking UK asylum, reported BBC on Sunday night.

BBC reported that the plane resumed its journey to New York's John F. Kennedy airport, leaving behind the five Syrian passengers in the UK.

The plane, a Boeing 777, was on its way to New York when a passenger found a threatening letter in the bathroom. The pilot alerted the authorities and made an emergency landing in a Scottish airport.

BBC correspondent Nada Tawfik, who found the note in the bathroom's sink, reports that the note read ''I'll set this plane on fire.'' It also pinpointed a seat number.

After the plane landed in Glasgow, all 326 passengers underwent extensive interrogation by the police. The police also searched the aircraft, but found nothing.

According to the UNHCR, the United Nations refugee agency, the number of Syrian refugees are estimated at over 1.5 million.
