After the 2-2 draw with Zimbabwe in a thrilling opening Group B game at the African Nations Cup on Sunday, Algeria forward Riyad Mahrez has blamed the performance on his team and claimed that they had to win the match.
"We only have ourselves to blame," Mahrez was quoted as saying on the CAF official website on Monday.
The 2016 African player of the year star Mahrez handed Algeria a 12th minute lead with a goal befitting his new status but then saw Zimbabwe come from behind to lead with just eight minutes left before the Leicester City forward salvaged a draw by completing his double.
"We didn't perform in the first half but played very well in the second half and should have scored several more goals," he added.
"We knew the first match was going to be difficult," Mahrez said.
Algeria will take on Group B opponent's Tunisia in the second matchday on 19 January.
"We need to keep working and play well in the second match against Tunisia," Leicester City star Mahrez said.
