Egypt's 2019 AFCON player profiles: Mohsen, the target man

A striker who is quite adept at dropping deep to create space for onrushing teammates, Marwan Mohsen provides different options for Egypt.

Although his goal-scoring record is not impressive, his abilities to play as a target man could come in handy for coach Javier Aguirre.

Mohsen had an injury-disrupted season with Cairo giants Ahly, making only 23 appearances in all competitions, scoring eight goals.

He was Egypt's main striker at the previous Nations Cup edition in 2017 but suffered a serious knee injury in the 1-0 quarter-final win over Morocco, with the Pharaohs struggling without his presence.

He also featured in all of Egypt's three group-stage matches at last year's World Cup finals in Russia but hardly made an impact.

The 30-year-old would compete for the lone forward role with Sporting Braga's Ahmed Hassan 'Koka' and Arab Contractors striker Ahmed Ali, who is the Egyptian Premier League's top scorer with 18 goals.

While Koka and Ali should provide a penalty-box presence, Mohsen is capable of offering a similar threat but will also have the advantage of linking up with deep-lying forwards.

Mohsen, who made his Egypt debut in September 2011, has 29 international caps, scoring six goals.
