Zamalek defender Mahmoud Hamdi started the season in convincing fashion before an injury he picked up during an Egypt training camp for the Nations Cup qualifiers last November kept him on the sidelines for around three months.

Since recovering from the injury, Hamdi has been trying to regain his former.

Nicknamed El-Wensh (crane) in reference to his power, Hamdi is known for being a no-nonsense defender. However, his aggressive style of play sometimes costs his team dearly and leads to him being booked or red-carded.

He made his international debut against Kuwait on 26 May, 2018 and that was enough to convince former Egypt coach Hector Cuper to book him a ticket for the World Cup. However, he didn't make any appearances at the Russia finals.

Hamdi is not likely to earn a place in coach Javier Aguirre's starting line-up, who prefers to field Ahmed Hegazi and Baher El-Mohamadi as his central defence pair.
