Egypt's playmaker Walid Soliman is fit for Friday's African Cup of Nations (2019 AFCON) opener against Zimbabwe after recovering from an injury in the match against Guinea on Sunday, according to Egypt's team manager Ihab Leheta.

The 34-year-old veteran Ahly player Soliman was doubtful for the prestigious tournament opening match after being substituted in the team's 3-1 friendly win over Guinea on Sunday, but medical scans deemed him fit.

"Soliman picked up a knock against Guinea, but he underwent a scan Monday that revealed that he is well," Leheta told Time Sports TV channel late Tuesday.

"The technical staff preferred to rest the player in the final training session at our camp in Alexandria (on Monday), but he trained normally in today's session in Cairo to clear himself ready for Friday's opening match," he added.

Egypt is hosting this year’s 2019 AFCON, which has been expanded to 24 teams.

The tournament will take place from 21 June to 19 July.

The Pharaohs are set to host Zimbabwe at the opener on Friday in Cairo International Stadium.

Egypt, the record seven-time African champions, will play in Group A along with DR Congo, Uganda and Zimbabwe.

With Javier Aguirre at the helm, the Pharaohs are optimistic about winning the precious AFCON title for the first time since 2010.

Egypt reached the final of the 2017 edition, only to lose 2-1 to Cameroon.
