Egypt's skipper Ahmed Elmohamady apologised on Tuesday to the fans for the team's early elimination from the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, currently hosted by Egypt from 21 June to 19 July.

"I apologise to everyone for the early exit from the Africa Cup of Nations, and I thank all the fans who supported us every time. I wish good luck for the team in the future," the Aston Villa midfielder said via his official Twitter account.

اعتذر لكل الناس علي الخروج المبكر من كأس الأمم الأفريقية. وبشكر كل الجماهير اللي كان ورانا وساندنا في كل وقت. وبالتوفيق في ما هو قادم

The 31-year-old midfielder's apology came after the massive criticism that the national team faced after losing to South Africa on Saturday 1-0 in the AFCON round of 16, which prompted the sacking of the technical staff and the resignation of the Egyptian Football Association's (EFA) board.

The former Hull City full back Elmohamady participated in all four of Egypt's matches; scoring two goals against DR Congo and Uganda in the group stage.

The hosts qualified for the round of 16 with three successive victories against Zimbabwe, DR Congo, and Uganda.

Under sacked coach Javier Aguirre, the Pharaohs were looking to win the precious African Cup title for the first time since 2010, the last of their record seven victories.
