Security forces in Egypt's border Sinai Peninsula have killed seven Islamist militants, state news agency MENA reported, as part of an ongoing campaign against Islamist insurgents in the region.

Raids on Wednesday in the northern part of the region--in the town of Sheikh Zuweid and the Bear Al-Abd area--killed seven militant fighters as they were attempting to attack a security convoy, MENA said late on Wednesday

Ten shacks and buildings used as bases for terrorist attacks were destroyed in the offensive, security sources said.

Bombings and shootings have become commonplace since the army's removal of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi last July following massive street protests.

Militant attacks have killed approximately 500 police and military personnel since last summer.

Egypt's military have launched large-scale operations in the region to quell the burgeoning insurgency, killing dozens of militant fighters and arresting hundreds of suspects.

Ansar Beit Al-Maqdis, an active militant group which has claimed some of the deadliest attacks in recent months, has rebuffed the authorities' reports of the deaths and arrests, claiming last week that the army announces "fictitious victories."
