A policeman was shot by unknown assailants in Upper Egypt

Unidentified suspects shot dead a police officer in Egypt's Fayoum governorate on Wednesday, Al-Ahram's Arabic website reported.

The 35-year-old police officer was going home when unidentified suspects shot him.

While it is yet unclear whether the attack was terrorist in nature, Egypt's police forces have been targeted by militant groups since the ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in 2013, with hundreds of police officers killed since then.
