Mohamed El-Zawahiri, the brother of new Al-Qaeda leader and the US's most wanted man Ayman, is currently in prison awaiting execution.

A former member of Jihad, El-Zawahri was sentenced to death in absentia in 1999 for terrorist attacks in Egypt, including the 1997 kiling 62 people in Luxor. Having been extradited from the UAE that year, he was released in March as part of an amnesty extended to political prisoners by the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces. He was subsequently re-arrested a few days later.

Having been informed of the court ruling against him, he had 60 days to appeal the decision. To date, and in spite of the fact that the time is almost over, his lawyers have not lodged an appeal, If no appeal is received, he will be executed once the 60 days have passed.
