Unknown assailants staged an RPG attack on a security checkpoint near Rafah in North Sinai, state news agency MENA reported early Friday.

No deaths or casualties have been reported.

Egypt's army is currently battling a jihadist militant insurgency in North Sinai. A three-month state of emergency was declared in the region late October following a major deadly attack that left at least 30 security forces killed.

The army has faced jihadists in Sinai for almost a decade, but the situation has intensified in the past year and a half and expanded into Cairo and the Nile Delta, killing hundreds of army and police personnel. Civilians too have been caught up in the violence.

Two main jihadists groups have claimed responsibility for a number of these attacks – Anjad Misr and Ansar Beit Al-Maqdis, which swore allegiance to Islamic State (IS) in November.

The military has regularly announced killing and arresting hundreds of suspected 'terrorists'. It is currently creating a buffer zone on the Rafah-Gaza border, evicting hundreds of families.
