At least two people were killed on Monday during clashes between protesters and security forces in Cairo’s Matariya district, a day after the anniversary of the revolution.

The district in northern Cairo witnesses frequent clashes between supporters of ousted president Mohamed Morsi and the security forces.

The Interior Ministry said protesters shot at security forces, injuring four officers, and tried to storm Matariya police station, Al-Ahram Arabic news website reported.

Hisham Mubarak Law Center stated soldiers arrested 20 people in the clashes.

The situation reportedly escalated when protesters announced they would hold a sit-in in Matariya square.

At least 10 people were killed in Matariya on Sunday, including a police conscript and a 10-year-old boy, the highest death toll in one district on the day.

Clashes occurred in other parts of the capital until Sunday evening, but those in Matariya continued through Monday.
