A 16-year-old girl was killed and four civilians injured when an improvised explosive device detonated late Friday in Egypt's coastal Alexandria governorate.

Security forces rushed to the bomb site in Al-Asafra, east of Alexandria.

The girl was crossing a road when the explosion took place. The four injured were sitting in a coffee shop near where the bomb was planted, police investigations revealed.

Egypt has been combating a decade-long militant insurgency in North Sinai that spiked since the ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in July 2013.

Attacks have spread to Cairo and nearby governorates. Although army and police personnel have been the primary target of attacks, civilians have been affected too.
