Deatained leading Muslim Brotherhood figure and former MP Farid Ismail passed away after suffering a stroke, the now-dissolved Freedom and Justice Party announced Wednesday.
In a short statement on the Freedom and Justice Party's official Facebook page, the political arm of the Muslim Brotherhood announced that the former parliamentarian suffered the stroke last week.
The Freedom and Justice Party accused prison authorities of neglect as they did not transfer him to hospital immediately, which led to the rapid deterioration of his health, the statement said.
The interior ministry said Ismail, 58, died of liver failure in a Cairo Hospital, where he had been moved days earlier from jail.
The ministry added in a statement that he had received treatment for liver cirrhosis and Hepatitis C.
Born in 1957, the former parliamentarian was transferred to Al-Akrab Prison Hospital a couple of days ago.
Farid Ismail was arrested in September 2013. He was sentenced to seven years in jail in July 2014 for inciting violence in Sharqia governorate following the ouster of Mohamed Morsi in July 2013.
The Muslim Brotherhood was designated a terrorist organisation by the Egyptian government in November 2013.
The Freedom and Justice Party, the political arm of the Muslim Brotherhood, was dissolved by court ruling in August 2014.
