At least 4,136 Egyptian parliamentary hopefuls have submitted their papers to register as candidates since the registration period began last Wednesday, the High Elections Committee announced in a statement Saturday evening.
According to the statement, 230 out of the aspiring candidates were women.
The committee added that political parties and coalitions have not yet submitted their candidate lists.
Egypt's parliament – the House of Representatives – will be made up of 596 members, 448 elected as independents and 120 from party-based lists. The remaining 28 seats will be filled by presidential appointees.
The statement added that Cairo governorate has seen the most registration requests so far at 519, then Giza with 333, followed by Alexandria with 321.
The first stage of parliamentary elections is set to begin on 17 October. Those wishing to run can register between 1 and 12 of September.
