The Israeli government welcomed on Sunday the call made by Egypt's president Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi for more Arab countries to find peace with Israel.

Israel's prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu released the statement via his Twitter account after El-Sisi made the comments in an interview with the Associated Press (AP) in New York that was published on Sunday.

"PM Netanyahu again calls on PA President Abbas to return immediately to the negotiating table in order to advance the diplomatic process," the Israeli statement also said.

El-Sisi told AP that more should be done to resolve the Palestinian question and to expand Egypt's peace with Israel to include more Arab countries.

He also said that the Middle East should fight together against the terrorist threat that has led to what he called a "ferocious war" in Egypt.

El-Sisi is in New York to attend the 70th United Nations General Assembly.
