Following the terrorist attacks in Paris on 13 November, French President Francois Hollande has decided to instate systematic border checks in France to be applied at roads, railways, seaports and airports, according to a statement posted on the French consulate in Egypt's website.

The statement says that Schengen visas are still valid, with the French embassy in Cairo dealing normally with Schengen visa applications. Those applying for the visa are asked to present their applications at the TLS contact centre at the Cairo and Alexandria branches.

Visa applications related to official passports (diplomatic, service and special) are still being dealt with directly through the General Consulate of France in Cairo.

Schengen visa holders crossing French borders should present documents regarding the circumstances of their stay in France.

If the visitor is a tourist, the documents should contain relevant information such as hotel reservations. If it is a business visit, documents should contain information including a formal work letter or an invitation from a French institution. In case of a private stay, the visitor should have a formal invitation letter by a resident in France.

Formal documents should also contain information regarding the financial status of the visitor such as international credit cards, etc, as well as a copy of the return ticket reservation.
