As Google released its annual "Year in Search," Ahram Online takes a look in to the 10 most googled people in Egypt, which interestingly do not include but one political figure.
The shadow of death covered the list, as most of the people googled passed away in 2015.
1- Faten Hamama
At the top of the list comes legendary cinema star and diva Faten Hamama, who passed away at the age of 84 in January 2015 after a long cinema career that started in 1939 with a small role in a black and white film while she was seven years old.
Labelled as the Lady of the Arab Silver Screen, Hamama starred in almost 100 films during her career.
2- Omar Sharif
Months following her death, her former husband Omar El-Sharif, whom she married in a love story that rocked Egyptian society in 1950, passed away in Cairo in July at the age of 83 after a struggle with illness.
A 1960s Egyptian cinema icon and internationally renowned actor, Sharif reached international acclaim with movie epics including Lawrence of Arabia and Doctor Zhivago. He was the only Egyptian actor to be nominated for an Oscar for best supporting actor and to win a Golden Globe for Doctor Zhivago.
3- Nour El-Sharif
In August, Egyptians googled iconic and beloved actor Nour El-Sharif, who passed away at the age of 70.
Starting in the mid 1960s, Nour El-Sharif had a portfolio of 200 films, 17 plays and more than 20 television series to his name.
4- Mirna El-Mohandes
Though not as iconic or famous like others on the list, many Egyptians googled in August Egyptian actress Moran, who died in her mid-30s after a struggle with cancer.
5- Yasmin El-Narsh
Heiress and businesswoman Yasmine El-Narsh, aka the airport lady, captured the attention of Egyptians in May after a video went viral on social media of her in a heated altercation with an officer at Cairo International Airport.
She was referred to the criminal court in the same month for assault and drug possession, and was sentenced in October to four years in prison and fined LE50,000.
6- Paris Hilton
Famous American heiress Paris Hilton was among the top Google searches in June after appearing in popular hidden-camera show Ramez Wakel El-Gaw (Ramez in Control) during the Holy Month of Ramadan.
7- Shimaa El-Sabbagh
The shooting of 32-year-old Egyptian leftist activist Shaimaa El-Sabbagh near Tahrir Square at a peaceful march commemorating the 25 January revolution in January made her name a commonly searched item in 2015.
In June 2015, a criminal court sentenced a policeman to 15 years in prison for killing El-Sabbagh in one of the toughest and fastest court sentences against a policeman over the killing of protesters in Egypt.
El-Sabbagh is the only political activist appearing on the Google list for Egypt in 2015.
8- Pardis
Belly dancer Pardis created controversy in Egypt three times according to Google Trends in 2015.
In April, she redid a popular 1970s song in a controversial video clip, and was arrested in May for inciting debauchery along another belly dancer.
She was sentenced to prison for six months, but the sentence was later reduced on appeal to three months. After her release from jail, she was back to work in December.
9- Said Tarabik
Despite having a long career as a supporting actor in cinema, TV and theatre, late actor Said Tarabik was among the most talked about actors in 2015 for reasons other than his work.
In August, the 74-year-old veteran actor surprised everyone by marrying a younger actress in her 30s, sparking amusement on social media as the photos of their wedding went viral.
In November, Tarabik, who gained fame for performing in comedic films, passed away of a heart attack, leaving behind a feud between his family and his young widow.
10- Shady Srour
With 3,000,000 fans on Facebook alone, video blogger Shady Srour achieved online stardom in 2015 by posting comic sketches and funny videos.
The 20-year-old has become well-known for his sketches lampooning Egyptian long-cherished traditions and social taboos.
