High-profile MP Sirri Siam said on Monday that he has handed in his resignation to parliament, as “there is an atmosphere trying to make [him] unable to fulfill the parliamentary role.”

Siam, who handed in his resignation on Sunday, told Ahram Arabic website that some MPs who are “considered [legal] experts were chosen to work on drafting the by-laws of the parliament, but [he] wasn’t among those parliamentarians.”

Siam is the former chairman of the Court of Cassation and the Higher Council for Judges and one of 28 public figures appointed to Egypt's parliament by President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi last month.

“If I can’t be used in the legislative field, how can I be beneficial [to the parliament]?” Siam asked.

The parliament will vote in the upcoming sessions on Siam’s resignation, as two thirds of the members must approve it.

Siam added that his resignation is “final,” and he will not be present in the parliament’s hearings and activities starting 7 February, the date on which he submitted his resignation.

He concluded by wishing luck to all parliamentarians in their “national role” for the good of Egypt and its people, saying that he would go back to writing and giving lectures.
