University professors have renewed their calls for a general strike at the start of the coming school year because they say that the cabinet of Prime Minister Esam Sharaf has backtracked on its decision to sack the university presidents appointed under toppled president Hosni Mubarak.
Instead of ousting the university presidents, the cabinet decided to hold elections for the positions which would become vacant after the presidents’ tenures expire.
Protesting professors also accused the Supreme Council of the Universities of manipulating the rules and regulations of the elections that were previously agreed upon.
