Egyptian president Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi issued a decree Tuesday to extend the state of emergency in specific areas of North Sinai for three months starting on 29 July at 1:00 AM, according to the Official Gazette.

The state of emergency was originally imposed in August 2013 by interim president Adly Mansour after violence erupted following the ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi.

Egypt's security forces are fighting a decade-long Islamist insurgency in parts of North Sinai which spiked following Morsi's ouster.

Hundreds of policemen and soldiers have been killed by militants as the army in turn said security operations have killed hundreds of militants.
