Protesters march to highlight violence against Copts in Egypt (Photo: Mai Shahin)
At around 5:30, a march by thousands of Copts against sectarian violence and the burning of churches in Egypt came under attack by stone-throwers.
Ahram Online correspondents at the scene report that the Coptic protesters and supporters were nearing Shubra tunnel, heading towards the State broadcasting headquarters in Maspero, downtown Cairo, when unidentified assailants attacked the peaceful protesters.
Last Tuesday, 3,000 Copts also marched from Shubra along the same route only to be met with military police and Central Security Forces who prevented them from starting an open ended sit-in outside Maspero, using violence to disperse the crowd.
Our reporters add that a number of vehicles damaged in the clashes, but no injuries have been confirmed so far.
Clashes have since subsided and marchers, who planned this action as a peaceful protest, have regathered and are on their way to Maspero.
