Egyptian prosecutor general Nabil Sadek assured the parents of reseracher Giulio Regeni, who was murdered earlier this year in Egypt, of Egypt's commitment to achieving justice in the case during a meeting in Rome on Wednesday.

According to the Egyptian prosecutor general's office, the meeting between the Regenis and Sadek lasted for 50 minutes.

Sadek started an official visit to Rome on Monday upon the invitation of Rome's deputy-prosecutor Sergio Colaiocco to discuss the last developments in the Regeni murder probe.

The prosecutor general's office in Cairo stated that the Egyptian side  presented to their Italian counterparts investigation reports requested by Rome, including statements by the head of the independent union of street vendors, who had reported Regeni to the authorities for “suspicious behaviour” days before the student disappeared.

The Egyptian authorities have said that Regeni was monitored following the report by the union head, with whom Regeni had met, but that the operation was suspended before the student’s disappearance after it was deemed that he posed no danger to national security.

The Egyptian prosecutors also presented to the Italian investigators a short video clip showing a meeting between Regeni and the head of the street vendors union filmed by the latter.

The Italian investigators handed to the Egyptian side Regeni's Bank account information in Italy and UK.

Regeni was in Cairo to conduct research on independent trade unions when he went missing on 25 January, the fifth anniversary of Egypt’s 2011 Revolution. His body was found bearing signs of torture by a roadside on the outskirts of Cairo on 3 February.

Egypt has strongly denied claims that security forces were involved in Regeni's murder.
