Egypt’s Armed Forces foiled on Monday an attempt to smuggle arms into the country through its western border with Libya, a statement by the Ministry of Defense said on Monday.
The Egyptian army received intelligence that a large number of vehicles was in the process of crossing into Egypt, according to the ministry.
Based on the intelligence, Egypt’s air forces launched a reconnaissance operation on the border and immediately targeted the convoy as it attempted to cross into Egypt.
The army destroyed 15 vehicles carrying arms and ammunitions.
Egyptian air forces and border guards continue a search for the smugglers.
Egypt's over 1,000 kilometre-long border with Libya has seen the regular smuggling of arms since the fall of Libya's Gaddafi regime in 2011.
