Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi told Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in a phone call on Wednesday that Egypt rejects the decision by US President Donald Trump to officially recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, the Egyptian presidency announced.

Shortly after Trump's announcement, the Egyptian foreign ministry released a statement officially condemning the decision, warning that it could negatively affect the Palestinian-Israeli peace process.

Egypt has consistently maintained its full support for a two-state solution along the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as the capital of the Palestinian state.
