Egypt's foreign minister Sameh Shoukry met on Thursday with UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) commissioner-general Pierre Krähenbühl in Cairo to discuss the latest developments in the humanitarian situation in Palestine as well as the financial situation of the agency itself, the Egyptian foreign ministry said in a statement.

Shoukry and Krähenbühl discussed the financial challenges facing UNRWA after the decision by US President Donald Trump to cut US funds to the UN agency in January.

Egypt has been heading the consulting committee of the UNRWA since July 2017.

During the meeting, the UNRWA commissioner-general expressed his appreciation for Egypt's efforts in providing humanitarian aid to the Palestinians.

Krähenbühl also revealed that UN Secretary-General António Guterres will hold a meeting in Geneva later this month to discuss the deteriorating financial situation of the UNRWA after the US decision.

Minister Shoukry praised the efforts by the UNRWA and the commissioner-general to improve the situation of the Palestinian refugees, whether within Palestine or in host countries.

Shoukry also added that Egypt supports the UNRWA and its activities in negotiating with international donors to fill the gap in the agency's budget.
