Egyptian authorities have opened the Rafah border crossing with Gaza during the three-day Eid Al-Fitr holiday, according to a statement by the Palestinian embassy.

The Rafah border crossing is the main gateway to the outside world for 1.8 million Palestinians living in the Israeli-besieged Gaza Strip, and is the only crossing point not controlled by Israel.

The Rafah crossing was kept open during the entire month of Ramadan upon orders by Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi.

According to the embassy statement, a total of 11, 455 people have travelled across the border, including students and injured Palestinians.

Egypt has also been sending humanitarian aid to Gaza to ease the burden on Palestinians.
