Church authorities in Assiut, in Upper Egypt, have deplored what they have described as an “irresponsible act” of a Coptic student accused of insulting Islam.

Chaos and sectarian violence erupted in several villages in Assiut two days ago after a school student, Masoud Abdullah, reportedly posted blasphemous pictures insulting the Prophet Mohamed on his Facebook account.

In a meeting with Governor El-Sayed El-Borie, Christian priests and Muslim sheikhs worked on cooling down tensions, while trying to respond to the demands of protesters who had earlier wanted to hunt down the student.

The angry Muslims demanded that Abdullah and his family leave Assuit for good, and that he should be prosecuted for blasphemy.
