Egypt's Army Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Mohamed Farid discussed Egyptian-US military cooperation as well as counter-terrorism efforts with the Commanding General of US Army Central Lt. Gen. Michael X. Garrett, the Egyptian army said in a statement on Monday.

Lieutenant General Farid and Lt. Gen. Garret discussed "developments in the Middle East, as well as regional and international efforts to eliminate terrorism and restore security and stability in the region," the statement explained.

The talks come as Egypt and the US stage the Bright Star 2018 drills, which are running from 8 to 20 September at the Mohamed Naguib military base in northwestern Egypt, with the participation of a number of brotherly and friendly countries.

During the meeting, Farid said Cairo is looking forward to further military cooperation with Washington, namely in joint military exercises to boost combat capabilities and exchange of expertise between the two countries.

Garrett was quoted by the statement as stressing his country's keenness to deepen bilateral relations with Cairo in all fields, citing the Bright Star drills as an example of exchanging expertise and raising training capabilities.
