The United Nations (UN) has selected Egypt among several countries to launch a campaign against sexual harassment. According to Khawla Matar, head of the UN's mediation section, the international organization is concerned with promoting gender equality.

Sexual harassment has been rampant in Egypt for years. In fact, according to a survey by the Egyptian Center for Women’s Rights (ECWR), service workers, housewives and professionals alike all reported experiencing sexual harassment. The most common form is inappropriate touching (40 per cent of all respondents), followed by verbal harassment (38 per cent). Additionally, 30 per cent of respondents said harassment was a daily struggle.
